The 14 year old, born and bred in the computer age comes to visit his cousin 30 years his senior and sits at the computer to show him his favorite web sites and programs. The elder cousin observes the youngster masterfully typing at the keyboard as if he was Franz Liszt at the piano, He knows that his many years at the computer have made him keyboard proficient, but could he improve to that level?
David Johnson was prompted by his cousin’s visit to think of a way to speed up his own typing (and frankly he was a little annoyed that the kid was way faster than him). The key lay in the ability to keep ones eyes on the screen and eliminate the habit of looking back to the keyboard.
David created TypeBlaster as an educational tool that’s fun to play. The game accomplishes its goal by requiring the player to keep their eyes on the screen so they can blast away each word as they fly through space. The hunt and peck typist relies less on looking at the keyboard. With a little practice, keeping your eyes on the screen while you type becomes second nature.
David asked his cousin to try out the game. The kid’s enthusiastic email response: “Holy Cow! That’s the best game ever! All the other typing games are so boring…but I couldn’t stop playing this!”
David couldn’t help the grin that broke across his face with the thought: “That’s right kid, now lets use that typing to write some code."
